She also displayed a natural talent for singing and dancing and a strong work ethic. Spears grew up with an alcoholic father, an exacting mother, and a fear of disappointing them both. ![]() But Friend cannot help but worry, “Is the father I wanted the father they want, too? Or is the father I got the father I’ve inevitably become?” Mostly engaging, the narrative at times seems self-serving despite the author’s efforts at candor.Ī heartfelt memoir from the pop superstar. Then he stopped.” The man who emerged from these pieces was “curious, generous, errant, sensitive, bighearted.” He admitted to several affairs and was tormented by unfulfilled ambition. But fitting your family together begins as a jigsaw puzzle and becomes an anxiety dream.” Complicating the puzzle was his discovery, after his father’s death in 2019, of a trove of letters, journals, ruminations, and verses, including a file titled “Annals of Carnality 1948-58,” which revealed someone far different from the emotionally distant father who, Friend writes, “hugged me until I was about seven. “You’d think that by now,” he writes, “after years of observation, I’d have a fix on my closest relatives. That conflict is not between art and commerce but between commerce and commerce.Now in his mid-50s, “sliding down the neck of the hourglass,” veteran New Yorker staff writer Friend updates his memoir Cheerful Money by once again examining his childhood and young adulthood, education and aspirations, and reflecting, in intimate detail, on his marriage to food writer Amanda Hesser and parenthood to twins. ![]() Standards editors often tell one another, "Give them seven notes so you can negotiate." In the early nineteen-fifties, most shows, such as "Texaco Star Theatre," were sponsored by a single advertiser who had enormous power over the program… Writer points out that risqué material is more often left in a successful show than a mediocre one… Writers see Standards editors as Emily Posts who cling to archaic rules the editors see themselves as Emily Dickinsons who strive to preserve a cultural standard… Mentions that UPN does not have a Standards department… The rules of engagement in this routine warfare are understood by everyone involved. After the terrorist attacks of September 11th, Standards departments examined every show and commercial for material that could now seem raw or insensitive… This timidity has its roots in the way television entertainment began. standards of obscenity, community standards of indecency, and, particularly, corporate standards of comfort… The constantly shifting standards of Hollywood’s Standards departments provide a sharper picture of mainstream American mores than any Gallup poll, Presidential campaign, or John Irving novel. They scrutinize every show and commercial for vulgarity, sexuality, violence, and subject matter that could violate F.C.C. Most Standards editors have experience as lawyers, teachers, and members of the clergy. OF BROADCASTING about television Standards and Practices departments and the censoring of network shows… Writer tells about the fight over the use of "bullshit" on the premiere episode of "Philly", a new drama from Steven Bochco… ABC employs twenty-seven Standards and Practices censors, or "editors," and the other broadcast networks have similar staffs. ![]()
